The Orion Mask edition by Greg Herren Literature Fiction eBooks
Orion's Mask is another Greg Herren novel set in the Louisiana area. I have red 14 of Herren's books and never been disappointed. He is an excellent author of mystery and suspense. Every book of Herren's has it unpredictable twists and turns. Like Perry mason fom year back, I have never been able to guess "Who Dun It" in one of his novels.
This is an excellent book and deserves to be read by many.

The Orion Mask edition by Greg Herren Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I haven't read much of the gothic romantic mystery world - I think I bumped into a few when I was in university Lit classes, but for the most part, it's not a genre I've explored. So when I read the author's introduction and learned that I was in for a book type with which I had little experience, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself looking forward to it this was going to be new and interesting.
It's obvious to anyone who has read him that Greg Herren can hop between genres with ease - YA, mystery, noir, romance, short fiction, horror, erotica... I'm not sure there's a genre he's tried yet that he hasn't delivered. I first bumped into his books in mystery, and though I think that's a thread that is common through almost everything he writes - there's always someone with a secret, something that needs to be uncovered by the main character - the tones of the books slide effortlessly into their various genres.
The Orion Mask is intriguing in great part due to the narrator. Heath is an easy character to connect with. He's a gay everyman - cute (but not gorgeous), working hard to get by at a job he doesn't like most of the time, doing school part-time, and single after making some bad choices with where he let his heart go. He's not confident about himself, not really, and that's charming and makes for a character who second-guesses himself without it seeming strange.
The main riddle of The Orion Mask is in Heath deciding to make contact with his biological mother's family. See, it turns out that Heath's mother is his step-mother, and when Heath finds his birth certificate and sees another woman's name listed as 'mother' it starts a series of events that make him question everything he thought he knew about family, love, and his own memories. His father desperately wanted him to have nothing to do with his mother's family - and even claims his mother was an evil woman - and for most of his life, Heath has let that be.
But after his father's death, an opportunity arrives to meet the family he never knew he had. And what a family - wealthy, a sprawling plantation home, and someone who desperately wants to make sure that secrets remain buried.
The atmosphere is dead on in this book - a slow menacing boil set perfectly with the Louisiana whipcrack-change weather, a plantation full of men and women with something to hide, and a young man who wants to be a part of something so badly he's willing to risk almost everything.
The mystery itself is well crafted, and if I struggled a bit with the romantic sub-plot it was only because of my own hang-ups. I really liked the cast of characters around Heath - everyone felt raw and on the edge of snapping, and as you uncover the family secrets, that very much makes sense. The ending is similarly sudden and shifts things to a finale that puts everything in a new place - a place that might even be hopeful for those who survive.
Herren just keeps getting better!
As usual, great read from Herren. Big surprise at end.
A fun read. Love the description about life in New Orleans.
The Orion Mask a story of a young man in search of family and truth really leads through his journey .
Heath searches for a family and a mother he never got to know. Little did he realize he would uncover the truth and find the story .
Great read! Highly entertaining and fast paced. The lead character is well developed and you have a clear picture of who the others are... well except one but in a mystery that is always the case. Right?;-) Without giving anything away, there was one character I would have liked to see more deeply developed just because of what he says at the end. I recommend this book!
1. All great art evokes strong emotions. 2. You have evoked strong emotions for me. 3. I don,t know if that makes your writing great, but as a retired English teacher, I have to admire your artistry. 4. Your characters resonate with me, and I am going to read all of your oeuvre again. 5. The only lack I see is there are'nt more novels. Get busy and produce more, please.
